Keatinge & Ball operated in Richmond and became the Confederacy's most prolific note printer, but by late 1861 the limitations were already showing. Cotton paper was chosen partly out of necessity — Northern suppliers were cut off — yet the resulting stock varied considerably in weight and color across print runs, making P#26 examples genuinely inconsistent even within the same series.

The underprint was a rudimentary anti-counterfeiting measure that proved largely ineffective. Northern presses, most notoriously in New York, flooded the South with convincing fakes, and the Confederate Treasury knew it. Distinguishing genuine Keatinge & Ball production from contemporary counterfeits remains a real authentication issue with this type.
