The Bank of Toronto was chartered in 1855, making the "185x" dating on this note almost certainly 1856 or later — the bank's first notes entered circulation only after its doors opened in that year. The American Bank Note Company, newly consolidated in New York from several competing security printers, produced this issue during its earliest years of operation under that name, when Canadian chartered bank business was among its most competitive contracts.
Ontario's Free Banking Act had recently reshaped the chartered bank environment, and Toronto was aggressively positioning itself against the older Montreal-based institutions. This note predates Confederation by a decade.
