The 2024 polymer reissue continues the Monetary Authority's long-running peg arrangement with Singapore — the Brunei dollar and Singapore dollar have circulated interchangeably under the Currency Interchangeability Agreement since 1967, making this note legally accepted at face value in Singapore. Few bilateral currency arrangements of this kind have lasted this long without formal merger of the issuing authorities.
The shift to polymer for this denomination follows the broader regional trend but also reflects Brunei's particular climate conditions, where high humidity significantly shortens the lifespan of cotton-paper notes.
