Tajikistan introduced its somoni currency in October 2000, replacing the Tajik ruble at a rate of 1,000 to 1 — a reset made necessary by the economic devastation following the 1992–1997 civil war. The 10 diram was part of that inaugural coinage series, though chronic underfunding of the National Bank meant brass plated steel rather than solid alloy construction from the outset.
