Andorra issued commemorative silver pieces under licensing arrangements that allowed the principality to produce collector coinage despite having no central bank and no indigenous currency in everyday circulation — French francs and Spanish pesetas served that function until the euro arrived in 2002. The Salt Lake City games provided a convenient occasion.
KM#175 is one of several Olympic issues Andorra released across the late 1990s and early 2000s, a period when the principality aggressively expanded its commemorative program largely for export to the collector market rather than domestic use.
