Reverse description The reverse presents a gilt high-relief effigy of the goddess Venus standing upright upon a large scallop shell, rendered in the manner of Botticelli's celebrated composition 'The Birth of Venus.' The figure is depicted in full length, nude, with long flowing hair, her right hand raised to her chest and her left hand gathering a lock of hair at her side. The central motif is finished in applied gold gilding against a deeply contrasted dark proof field, framed on all sides by an ornate silver acanthus-scroll border running the full perimeter of the rectangular flan. The legend VENUS appears in raised capital letters at the base of the design.
