| Reverse description | A finely sculpted right-facing bust of Pope John Paul II, wearing his papal zucchetto and vestments, occupies the right portion of the field. To his left and slightly behind, an imposing stylized effigy of the Virgin Mary, rendered in a serene and modernist style, fills the background in high relief, her veiled face inclined toward the Pope. The two figures are juxtaposed in a devotional composition emphasizing the Pope's profound Marian devotion. The legend JOAN PAU II is inscribed in two lines along the upper right field. |

| Additional information |
John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, and Andorra — one of the few sovereign states whose co-princes include the Bishop of Urgell — had particular institutional cause to issue a memorial strike that year. The episcopate of Urgell has held co-princely authority over Andorra since 1278, making the Vatican's relationship with the principality something far more than ceremonial.
