Andorra's coinage authority issued a series of papal silver pieces in the early 2000s while John Paul II's health was visibly deteriorating — this 2004 strike came just one year before his death in April 2005. Andorra, lacking a central bank and using the euro as its de facto currency, has long relied on collector-oriented issues as a meaningful source of state revenue.
