Additional information

John Paul II visited Andorra in 1982 — the first papal visit to the co-principality in its history — and the Andorran government maintained an unusually close relationship with the Vatican throughout his pontificate, given that the Bishop of Urgell serves as one of Andorra's two co-princes by constitutional arrangement. This coin was struck in 2004, the year before his death, when his declining health from Parkinson's disease was widely publicized.

KM#189 is part of a broader Andorran commemorative silver program that accelerated sharply in the early 2000s, producing numerous single-year issues with limited secondary market depth.
