Issued the year before John Paul II's death in April 2005, this Andorran commemorative was produced under the co-princeship arrangement that gives the Bishop of Urgell — not the Pope — formal co-sovereign authority over Andorra. The papal connection is therefore indirect but constitutionally genuine: the Bishop of Urgell has held that role since 1278, making the Vatican's influence on Andorran governance older than most European nation-states.
