Andorra's extended series of world heritage silver issues, of which this Chichen Itza piece is one entry, was produced largely for the collector market rather than circulation — Andorra adopted the euro for everyday transactions in 2012, but had long relied on Spanish pesetas and French francs before that, issuing its own coinage almost exclusively as a numismatic revenue stream. The Diners denomination existed in a legal grey area for decades, never fully backed by a central bank of Andorra's own.
Chichen Itza was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 and named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, which prompted a wave of commemorative issues from non-Mexican mints between 2007 and 2010.
