Additional information

Tunisia's first gold coinage as an independent republic, these pieces were struck as the young state under Habib Bourguiba sought to establish financial credibility abroad. The Banque Centrale had been founded only in 1958, and issuing a heavyweight gold dinar was partly a signaling exercise aimed at international currency markets and foreign creditors rather than domestic circulation.

The "without flags" distinction separates this type from a later variant — a small but cataloged design change that collectors and auction houses treat as a distinct issue. KM#360 pieces command a premium over the modified type when both are available.
