| Obverse description | Central field features the outline map of Tunisia rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished background, with decorative Arabic calligraphic ornaments encircling the periphery. The dual dates 1407-1987, representing both the Islamic Hijri and Gregorian calendars, appear in the lower exergue in raised numerals. The overall design reflects a stylized, modernist aesthetic characteristic of Tunisian commemorative coinage of this era. |

Tunisia's 1987 gold issue appeared the same year Zine El Abidine Ben Ali deposed Habib Bourguiba in a bloodless medical coup on November 7th — a date Ben Ali's government would subsequently elevate to national holiday status as the "Change." Whether the coin predates or postdates that November transition depends on its precise striking window, and the catalog record does not resolve it. The Banque Centrale de Tunisie issued relatively few gold pieces during this decade, keeping mintages modest and circulation essentially nonexistent.
