Obverse description The stylized German Federal Eagle rendered in a bold, modernist design occupies the central field, depicted with wings spread and head turned to the right. The eagle's plumage is rendered with clean, geometric lines characteristic of the post-war Bundesadler. The circular legend reads BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND along the upper periphery and 10 DEUTSCHE MARK along the lower periphery, with the date 2000 also appearing in the legend. The mint mark A appears in the lower portion of the field.

Additional information

Expo 2000 in Hannover was the first World's Fair held in Germany and ran under the theme "Humankind, Nature, Technology" — an unusually self-critical proposition for a country still absorbing the economic strains of reunification. The event drew 184 nations but fell well short of its projected 40 million visitors, closing with significant financial losses and a broader reassessment of whether the World's Fair format had outlived its commercial relevance.

Germany issued commemorative 10 Mark pieces routinely throughout the Federal Republic era, and this is one of the final such coins before the mark was retired at the end of 2001.
