| Obverse description | The stylized German Federal Eagle, rendered in a linear graphic style, occupies the central field. The eagle faces left with wings spread and is depicted without a shield on its breast, consistent with the republican Bundesadler design. The denomination '10' appears in large numerals at the lower right of the field, flanked by the date '1999' to its left, with the word 'DEUTSCHE MARK' completing the value statement. The circular legend 'BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND' runs along the upper periphery, with the mint mark 'J' appearing within the legend near the date. |

SOS-Kinderdorf was founded in 1949 by Austrian Hermann Gmeiner, who had watched post-war Europe fill with orphaned and displaced children and concluded that institutional care was failing them. His model — small family-style houses, each run by a single house mother — spread from the original village in Imst, Tyrol, to over 130 countries within five decades. Germany issued this commemorative in the organization's jubilee year, one of the few cases where a German silver ten-mark piece honors a private humanitarian body rather than a state institution or historical figure.
