Issued in 1989 to mark the Grundgesetz's fortieth anniversary, this coin arrived in a year that would rapidly make its commemorative premise feel like an artifact of a world already ending. The Basic Law being celebrated had governed only West Germany — within months of this coin's release, the Wall fell and reunification made the Federal Republic's forty-year story something to be folded into a larger one.
The .625 fineness was standard for the Deutsche Mark commemorative series, a deliberate step down from the .625 fine issues of earlier decades that reflected Bonn's ongoing effort to keep silver commemoratives affordable without abandoning the metal entirely.
