The XIII Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh in July 1986, overshadowed by a politically charged boycott — thirty-two nations withdrew in protest of the British government's refusal to impose sanctions on apartheid South Africa. The Gambia was among the boycotting nations, making this commemorative an odd artifact: a coin issued to mark a Games its own country declined to attend.
