Comments

The long print run across this series maps almost exactly onto the most turbulent stretch of Brazil's "Economic Miracle" and its aftermath. Delfim Netto's signature on the earliest sheets reflects his tenure as Finance Minister under the military government; by the time Langoni's name appeared, the miracle had curdled into stagflation and the first serious debt crisis of the 1980s. Five distinct signature combinations across two series prefixes is unusually high for a single low-denomination type.

Aloísio Magalhães — better known as a graphic designer and cultural theorist than a banknote specialist — brought a distinctly modernist sensibility to the Casa da Moeda commissions of this period, a notable departure from the engraving conventions that had dominated Brazilian note design for decades.
