Obverse lettering ELIZABETH II DG REG F D GIBRALTAR 2022 RDM TEN CROWNS
Reverse description The central field features five raised coin-like medallions, each depicting a different official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as used throughout her reign, arranged in a cruciform pattern — two at the upper left and right, one at centre, and two at the lower left and right. Between the medallions are decorative royal emblems representing the four nations of the United Kingdom: the rose of England, thistle of Scotland, shamrock of Ireland, and leek of Wales, along with ostrich feather and other royal devices. At the top centre, the royal cypher EIIR surmounted by a crown is prominently displayed. The peripheral legend, running continuously around the inner border, carries Queen Elizabeth II's celebrated 1947 dedication speech: I DECLARE BEFORE YOU ALL THAT MY WHOLE LIFE WHETHER IT BE LONG OR SHORT SHALL BE DEVOTED TO YOUR SERVICE AND THE SERVICE OF OUR GREAT IMPERIAL FAMILY TO WHICH WE ALL BELONG, repeated five times. Each portrait medallion bears the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI · GRA · REG · F · D.

Additional information

Gibraltar's mint has produced oversized commemorative issues for decades, leveraging the territory's independent licensing authority to issue coins that no other British jurisdiction would sanction at this scale. The Platinum Jubilee — marking Elizabeth II's 70 years on the throne, the longest reign in British history — generated an extraordinary volume of numismatic product across multiple mints worldwide in 2022, most of it issued before her death in September of that year.

The platinum plating on bronze at this diameter and weight is a production challenge: adhesion failures at the rim are not uncommon on pieces that saw any handling before encapsulation.
