Additional information

Alexander von Humboldt spent five weeks in New Spain and parts of Central America during his 1803–1804 return journey from South America, though Nicaragua itself fell outside his direct survey. His five-volume Personal Narrative and the broader Kosmos project shaped how European scientists understood the Americas for generations. Nicaragua's choice to place him on a legal-tender silver issue reflects the broader Latin American tradition of honoring Humboldt as an adopted intellectual patron — a custom that stretches back to Simón Bolívar famously calling him "the true discoverer of America."
