Nicaragua's move to polymer for this denomination came as part of a broader regional experiment in substrate durability — the Central American isthmus had long suffered high note turnover due to humidity and informal cash handling. The Canadian Bank Note Company had by 2007 developed considerable polymer printing experience, though the substrate itself originated with Australia's Note Printing Australia technology under license.
