Nicaragua's 1972 series was printed by De La Rue just before the catastrophic Managua earthquake of December 23rd that year, which killed an estimated 10,000 people and effectively destroyed the city's economic infrastructure. The disaster triggered severe disruption to normal banking operations and accelerated inflationary pressure that would deepen through the rest of the decade — notes from this series entered circulation into an economy already lurching toward crisis.
De La Rue's watermark security on this issue is relatively modest by the firm's own standards of the period.
