The Banco Nacional de Costa Rica was established in 1914 and by the late 1930s had consolidated its position as the dominant note-issuing authority in the country, absorbing the functions of several earlier commercial banks. This series coincides with a period of significant monetary reform in Costa Rica, though the Banco Central would not formally replace it as the sole issuer until 1950.
De La Rue's involvement with Central American issues during this period was extensive, and the quality of printing on these Costa Rican notes is notably consistent — which matters here because the 1937–1938 dating window spans two fiscal years, and minor plate variations between the two dates have been documented by specialists.
