Obverse description The obverse is dominated by a central intaglio vignette of a bald eagle perched on a rocky outcrop, wings spread, set within an ornate guilloche frame. The bank title BANCO MERCANTIL DE COSTA RICA arches across the top in bold letterpress, flanked by numeral 10 counters at each corner with intricate lathe-work underprint in red and blue. The lower portion carries the place of issue SAN JOSÉ, the denomination legend LA CANTIDAD DE DIEZ COLONES EN MONEDA ACUÑADA DE ORO, and overprinted SPECIMEN in red across the face, with Series A and zeroed serial numbers.

Reverse description The reverse presents a central intaglio vignette of a classical allegorical female figure seated beside a barrel and bale of goods, with a sailing vessel visible on the water in the background, evoking commerce and trade. The inscription BANCO arches above the vignette, with MERCANTIL DE COSTA RICA along the lower border, and numeral 10 counters occupy the left and right panels within elaborate guilloche rosette frames in green and multicolor underprint. The printer's imprint AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY, NEW YORK appears along the bottom margin.
