This small issue marks the opening years of Wilhelmina's solo reign — she had come to the throne in 1890 at age ten under a regency, and these coins were struck in the first years after she assumed full power at eighteen in 1898. The .640 fine silver alloy was a deliberate reduction from earlier Dutch silver coinage standards, part of a broader rationalisation of the Dutch monetary system in the late nineteenth century.

The series ran only through 1901 before being superseded by KM#135.
