Sobhuza II holds the record as the longest-reigning verified monarch in recorded history, ascending to the Swazi throne in 1921 and ruling until his death in 1982. These coins were struck during a period when he was consolidating absolute power — in 1973 he suspended the constitution, banned political parties, and ruled by decree, citing the incompatibility of Westminster-style democracy with Swazi tradition. The 10-cent series spanning 1974–1979 was produced entirely under that extra-constitutional arrangement.
