The Venda language coin is one of eleven issues in South Africa's ongoing series honoring each of the country's official languages, a program rooted in the constitutional recognition of linguistic equality enshrined in 1996. Venda, spoken primarily in Limpopo Province near the Zimbabwe border, was the administrative language of the nominally independent homeland of Venda from 1979 until reintegration in 1994 — one of four such bantustans granted nominal sovereignty under apartheid-era policy.
The Afrikaans designation on this issue refers to the language in which the coin's inscription appears, not the subject language itself — a distinction that trips up new collectors of this series.
