Roswell Army Air Field operated a prisoner-of-war camp under the Geneva Convention's requirement that captured personnel be compensated for labor — hence the need for a scrip economy rather than U.S. currency. These yellow paper chits, produced locally and redeemable only within the camp canteen system, kept POW purchasing power entirely contained. German prisoners could buy cigarettes, beer, and personal items without ever handling American money.
The yellow paper stock was intentional — color-coded to prevent substitution with other denominations and to distinguish POW scrip from any civilian currency.
