Obverse description The obverse presents a seated allegorical figure of the French Republic (Marianne), facing left, wearing a radiate crown and classical draped robes. She holds a torch aloft in her raised right hand, while her left arm rests upon a fasces or tablet at her side; a sheaf of grain rises behind her to the left. The circular legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE runs along the periphery, divided left and right of the central figure, with the date 1919 inscribed in the lower exergue and the engraver's name BARRE appearing just above it. The entire design is enclosed within a fine toothed border.
