Swaziland's coinage underwent a quiet but deliberate redesign in the mid-2000s as Mswati III — one of the world's last absolute monarchs — consolidated the visual identity of his reign across state institutions. The second portrait series replaced an earlier effigy judged to inadequately reflect the king's mature likeness, a decision made entirely within the royal prerogative with no parliamentary process involved, parliament having been banned since 1973.
