Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from Britain in August 1962, but the coinage series commemorating that event wasn't unified under the Central Bank until the bank's establishment in 1964. The KM#44 type belongs to the long-running definitive series that replaced the British Caribbean Territories dollar coinage — a transition that took years to fully execute across the Eastern Caribbean.
