The Société des Plantations de Honquan was one of several French-owned rubber and agricultural concessions operating in Cochinchina in the early 1920s, issuing their own fractional scrip to pay local laborers when small-denomination piastre coinage was chronically short in rural areas. Plantation scrip of this type was technically illegal under French Indochinese monetary regulations but was routinely tolerated by colonial administrators who had no practical alternative to offer.
Imprimerie C. Ardin & Fils was the dominant commercial printer in Saigon at the time, producing everything from government stationery to exactly this kind of private necessity issue.
