| Obverse description | Right-facing bust of Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch colonial administrator, rendered in a naturalistic style with long flowing hair and period costume with lace collar. The effigy occupies the central field, with the engraver's initials 'T.S.' visible at the lower left. The legend 'SOUTH AFRICA' arcs along the upper periphery, while the date appears along the right side of the coin. The portrait is modelled in moderately high relief against a smooth field. |
