Obverse description This mule coin bears the second portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as sculpted by Arnold Machin, depicting the Queen in right-facing profile with her hair elaborately coiffed and adorned with a tiara or diadem. The truncation of the bust is softly rendered, with the Queen wearing a light drape at the shoulder. The legend 'ELIZABETH II' arcs along the left field and 'NEW ZEALAND' along the right field, with the date '1972' positioned centrally below the bust in the lower exergue. The obverse die used on this piece is the same as that employed on the standard New Zealand 10 cents of this period, making its pairing with a matching reverse a recognised mule error.
