The Seychelles remained a British Crown Colony throughout this issue's entire run, administered under the Colonial Office in London. When Elizabeth II's first portrait by Mary Gillick was adopted across Commonwealth territories following the 1953 coronation, Seychelles simply joined the queue of dependent territories updating their coinage through the Royal Mint — no local monetary authority existed to complicate the process. The nickel brass alloy used here was a deliberate postwar choice across several smaller colonies, substituting for the cupro-nickel that remained in higher demand for larger denominations elsewhere.
