Club Sugamo was the officers' club operating inside Sugamo Prison, Tokyo — the facility where Class A war crimes suspects were held during the Allied occupation and where several were executed following the International Military Tribunal for the Far East verdicts. This scrip circulated exclusively within that compound, issued for use by prison staff and personnel rather than by the Japanese inmates.
Occupation-era club and canteen tokens of this type were never intended to survive. Most were redeemed or discarded when the facility's function changed after the 1952 San Francisco Peace Treaty restored Japanese sovereignty and Sugamo was transferred back to Japanese authorities.
