Canadian Tire's promotional currency has circulated informally since 1958, but the 2017 Canada 150 issue marked a deliberate commemorative departure from the standard series. The notes were distributed through normal retail transactions during the sesquicentennial year, functioning as they always have — redeemable in-store against purchases — but printed in limited themed runs rather than as routine replenishment stock.
Not legal tender, never pretending to be, but tracked obsessively by a dedicated collector base that has catalogued every serial variation since the first Ned Bickell-era issues.
