| Obverse description | The complete arms of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas occupy the central field, depicting a quartered shield bearing a rising sun above a British vessel, supported on the dexter by a marlin and on the sinister by a flamingo, with a conch shell helm and crest above. A scroll beneath the shield carries the national motto in the legend: FORWARD UPWARD ONWARD TOGETHER. The circular legend COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS arcs along the upper periphery, following the scalloped contour of the coin, while the date appears in the lower field below the shield. |

The Bahamas switched from cupronickel to nickel-plated steel for this denomination sometime in the mid-2000s, a cost-driven transition common across Caribbean currency systems as global nickel prices spiked sharply following increased industrial demand from China. The Royal Mint produced Bahamian coinage for decades, though by this period the contract work had shifted among suppliers.
