KM#13 has been a fixture of Surinamese circulation since the 1980s, surviving the country's catastrophic hyperinflationary collapse of the early 1990s only by virtue of a full currency redenomination in 2004, when the Surinamese guilder was replaced by the Surinamese dollar at a rate of 1,000 to 1. This 2021 strike is effectively a third-generation descendant of that redenomination decision.
