Andorra's centim coinage of 2002 was issued as the country resisted adopting the euro at its launch — Andorra had no formal monetary agreement with the EU and continued issuing its own coinage well into the 2000s, despite using French francs and Spanish pesetas as de facto currency for most of the 20th century. A formal monetary agreement with the EU wasn't signed until 2011, with euro adoption following in 2014. These local issues circulated in a genuinely unusual monetary environment: a sovereign coinage for a territory that operated without a central bank.
