Vilches is a small municipality in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns it resorted to locally-issued cardboard small change during the Civil War after the Republican government's peseta coinage vanished from circulation almost immediately following the July 1936 uprising. These municipal emergency issues — cartones, as they were generically known — were produced under desperate conditions, often on whatever printing or office equipment was available locally, with no standardized format or regulatory oversight.

The Gari catalogue reference is incomplete, which is unsurprising for a piece this obscure. Many Vilches issues remain poorly documented.
