Vilanova de la Barca is a small municipality in the Lleida comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similar towns it issued its own fractional paper currency during the Civil War after Republican decree authorized local emergency emissions to address the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation. These municipal notes — collectively catalogued in enormous numbers by Turró — were produced locally, often without any professional printer involved, which accounts for the crude typography common to the series.

Survival rates for Lleida-province emissions are uneven; the region saw heavy fighting in the 1938 Aragon offensive.
