Sindicat Agrícola Cooperatiu de Verdú was one of dozens of Catalan agricultural cooperatives that began issuing emergency fractional currency in 1936–37 after the Republican government's inability to supply enough small coinage during the Civil War created a grinding, practical crisis at the village level. Verdú, a small municipality in the comarca of l'Urgell, issued its own series through the cooperative rather than the local ajuntament — unusual even by the anarchic standards of wartime Catalan monetary improvisation.

Thick card stock was common for these micro-emissions, partly to discourage crude forgery and partly because cooperative administrators were not printers.
