Montferri is a small municipality in the Alt Camp comarca of Tarragona province, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional paper money in 1937 to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metallic coin from circulation. The Republican government's decree authorizing local emergency currency gave administrative cover to what was already happening spontaneously across the zone — municipal councils printing whatever denominations they needed through whatever printer was available.
Imprenta Solé in Tarragona handled a substantial number of these municipal issues from the surrounding province. The sheer volume of similar commissions they processed that year makes plate mix-ups and reused design elements a known hazard when attributing pieces in this series.
