Gavà is a small municipality south of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War after the Republican government's coin shortage left local commerce effectively paralyzed. These municipal notes — collectively called "moneda local" or "bitllets locals" — were produced at the issuing town's own expense, often printed by local presses with minimal technical sophistication. Turró catalogued over a thousand distinct issues, and Gavà's 10 céntimos sits in the dense middle of that corpus.
Survival rates for these small-denomination cardboard issues are uneven; corner splits and surface handling damage are endemic to the format.
