Fleca Torrent was a bakery — a forn de pa — in the small Empordà village of Foixà, and this scrap of paper was its solution to the acute small-change shortage that paralyzed Catalonia from the summer of 1936 onward. When the Republican government failed to supply sufficient fractional coinage, thousands of local businesses, cooperatives, and municipalities printed their own emergency currency. The Generalitat eventually tried to regulate the phenomenon, but by then the floodgates were open.
A bakery-issued 10-céntim note is about as local as emergency currency gets. AL#2026 is among the more obscure Foixà emissions — Foixà itself had fewer than 200 inhabitants at the time.
