Falset is a small town in the Priorat region of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War after the Republican government's chronic shortage of small change left local commerce effectively frozen. These municipal notes — collectible under the broad "guerra civil" category — were produced under improvised conditions, often by local printers with no experience in security printing and minimal materials.
The nearly square format is a direct consequence of paper economy, not design choice. Turró catalogued over a thousand such emissions; Falset's issues are among the more obscure ones.
