Esparreguera's cardboard emergency issues were produced during the early months of the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone faced acute small-change shortages after hoarding stripped metal coinage from circulation almost overnight. Dozens of Catalan municipalities printed their own local fractional currency in 1936–37, with varying degrees of official sanction. Turró catalogues over a thousand such pieces from across the region.
The Ajuntament's issues circulated only within the municipality and were theoretically redeemable — though redemption became academic as Nationalist forces advanced into Catalonia by early 1939.
