Additional information

El Pedroso is a small municipality in the Sierra Norte of Seville province, and like hundreds of Republican-held towns in 1937, it faced a near-total collapse of metallic small change — hoarded, melted, or simply gone. The Ayuntamiento issued emergency cardboard cartones to keep local commerce functional while the Civil War consumed both the economy and the copper supply. These pieces circulated only within the issuing municipality and were theoretically redeemable, though many towns that issued them ceased to function as Republican administrations before redemption was ever possible.
