Canals is a small municipality in Valencia, and this 10 céntimos piece is one of hundreds of emergency fractional issues produced by Spanish local councils during the Civil War after Republican authorities effectively lost control of small-denomination coinage. The Consejo Municipal filled the gap with cardboard — not by choice, but because there was nothing else.

The Turró and Gari Mon references place it within the well-documented Valencian series, but survival rates for these local cardboard emissions vary enormously even within the same municipality's own issues.
